Cleaning a dab rig is essential to maintain its performance, preserve the flavor of your concentrates, and ensure a smooth and enjoyable dabbing experience. The frequency of cleaning depends on how often you use your dab rig, but it's generally a good idea to clean it after every few uses to prevent buildup and residue. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to clean a dab rig:
Materials you'll need:
- Isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher concentration)
- Coarse salt or Epsom salt
- Ziplock bags or plastic containers
- Cotton swabs or pipe cleaners
- Rubber bands (optional)
- Hot water
Step 1: Prepare your dab rig: Empty any water from your dab rig and make sure it's cool before starting the cleaning process. Disassemble any removable parts, such as the nail, banger, downstem, and reclaim catcher if you have one.
Step 2: Soak the pieces: Place the removable pieces of your dab rig, such as the nail, banger, downstem, and reclaim catcher, into separate ziplock bags or plastic containers. Pour enough isopropyl alcohol into each container to fully submerge the pieces. If you don't have a container big enough, you can use a ziplock bag and seal it with rubber bands to prevent leaks.
Step 3: Add salt and shake: Add a generous amount of coarse salt or Epsom salt into the containers with the alcohol and pieces. The salt will act as an abrasive, helping to scrub off the residue. Seal the containers tightly and shake them gently, making sure the salt comes into contact with all the surfaces.
Step 4: Soak the main body of the dab rig: Pour isopropyl alcohol into the main body of the dab rig until it's about half full. You can also add some salt to the rig. Use rubber bands to seal off any openings (like the mouthpiece and downstem holes) and then shake the rig to agitate the alcohol and salt inside. Allow the pieces and the main body of the dab rig to soak for at least 30 minutes to break down the residue.
Step 5: Scrub and rinse: After soaking, use cotton swabs or pipe cleaners to scrub away any remaining residue in the hard-to-reach areas of the dab rig and its components. Rinse all the pieces thoroughly with hot water to remove any alcohol and salt residue.
Step 6: Dry and reassemble: After rinsing, let all the pieces air dry completely. You can also use a hairdryer on a low heat setting to speed up the process. Once everything is dry, reassemble your dab rig, and it's ready for use again.
Regularly cleaning your dab rig will help keep it in good condition and ensure a more enjoyable dabbing experience. Always use caution when handling isopropyl alcohol and open flames. Avoid using rubbing alcohol that contains additives or scents, as they can leave unwanted residues in your rig. High-concentration isopropyl alcohol is recommended for the best cleaning results.
