To remove odors from plastic containers, you can follow these simple steps:

  1. Clean with Dish Soap: Wash the plastic container thoroughly with hot soapy water. Use a mild dish soap and a scrub brush or sponge to clean all surfaces, both inside and outside the container.

  2. Rinse Thoroughly: Rinse the container with warm water to ensure all soap residue is removed.

  3. Vinegar Soak: Create a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar (about 1 cup each). Submerge the plastic container in the vinegar solution and let it soak for at least 30 minutes or longer if the odor is particularly stubborn. The vinegar helps neutralize and remove odors.

  4. Baking Soda Paste: For persistent odors, make a paste of baking soda and water (a few tablespoons of baking soda mixed with enough water to form a thick paste). Apply the paste to the inside of the container and let it sit for a few hours or overnight. Then rinse it off thoroughly.

  5. Coffee Grounds or Tea Bags: Coffee grounds or used tea bags can also help absorb odors. Place a small amount of dry coffee grounds or a couple of used tea bags inside the container, close the lid tightly, and let it sit for a day or two. Remove the coffee grounds or tea bags before using the container again.

  6. Lemon or Citrus Peels: Lemon or citrus peels have natural deodorizing properties. Place some lemon or citrus peels inside the container, close the lid, and leave them for a few hours or overnight to absorb the odor.

  7. Sunlight and Fresh Air: After completing the above steps, leave the container open under direct sunlight for a few hours. Sunlight and fresh air can help further dissipate lingering odors.

  8. Activated Charcoal: If the smell persists, you can try placing some activated charcoal inside the container. Activated charcoal is excellent for absorbing odors. Leave it in the container for a day or two before removing it.

Remember that some strong odors may take more than one attempt to completely remove, especially if they have been absorbed into the plastic over time. If the plastic container still retains an odor after trying the above methods, it might be time to consider replacing it. Additionally, when storing food in plastic containers, try to avoid using them for strongly odorous foods, as these odors can be difficult to eliminate completely.
