Knowing whether your Instant Pot is naturally releasing pressure is relatively straightforward. When the cooking cycle is complete, the Instant Pot can release pressure in two ways: natural release and quick release.

  1. Natural Release: When the cooking time is over, the Instant Pot will automatically switch to a "Keep Warm" mode. During this time, the pressure inside the pot gradually decreases on its own. You can identify if the Instant Pot is naturally releasing pressure by observing the float valve (metal pin) or pressure indicator:

    a. Float Valve: The float valve is located in the lid handle and is usually in the "up" position during the cooking process. When the Instant Pot is naturally releasing pressure, the float valve will gradually drop down as the pressure decreases. This process can take anywhere from a few minutes to around 20-30 minutes, depending on the contents and volume of food in the pot.

    b. Pressure Indicator: Some Instant Pot models have a pressure indicator that pops up when the pot is under pressure. When the natural release occurs, this indicator will go down as the pressure decreases.

  2. Quick Release: If you wish to release the pressure quickly, you can do a "Quick Release." To perform a quick release, carefully turn the steam release handle or valve from the "Sealing" to the "Venting" position. Steam will rapidly escape from the pot, and the float valve or pressure indicator will drop down immediately.

Important safety note: When performing a quick release, always use a utensil or towel to turn the steam release handle to avoid burning your hand with the escaping steam. Also, keep your face and hands away from the steam to prevent any potential burns.

Always follow the specific instructions provided in your Instant Pot's user manual to ensure safe and proper usage. Different Instant Pot models may have slight variations in their designs and functionalities.
