Induction cooktops use electromagnetic fields to directly heat the cookware, making the cooktop itself remain relatively cool. This heating method requires the cookware to be made of or contain ferromagnetic materials, such as iron or stainless steel with a magnetic base. Non-ferromagnetic pots, on the other hand, do not contain these materials and are not compatible with induction cooktops for the following reasons:

  1. Magnetic field interaction: Induction cooktops generate a magnetic field that interacts with the magnetic materials in the cookware. The alternating magnetic field induces electrical currents within the cookware, which in turn generates heat. Non-ferromagnetic materials do not respond to the magnetic field, so they won't heat up on an induction cooktop.

  2. Efficient energy transfer: Induction cooking relies on the efficient transfer of energy from the cooktop to the cookware. The presence of ferromagnetic materials enables a strong and direct connection between the magnetic field and the cookware, allowing for effective heat generation. Non-ferromagnetic materials would impede this energy transfer, resulting in inefficient or no heating.

  3. Safety considerations: Induction cooktops are designed with built-in safety features that detect the presence of suitable cookware. If a non-ferromagnetic pot is placed on an induction cooktop, the cooktop may not recognize it and will not activate the heating elements. This safety measure prevents accidental activation and minimizes the risk of burns or other safety hazards.

While non-ferromagnetic pots cannot be used directly on induction cooktops, there are workarounds available. You can use an induction-compatible interface disk, which is a metal plate that acts as an intermediary between the cookware and the cooktop. The disk heats up when placed on the induction cooktop, and you can then place non-ferromagnetic pots on top of it to indirectly transfer the heat. However, this method may result in slower and less efficient cooking compared to using compatible cookware directly on the induction cooktop.
