  4. Steam-based dishwashers: Steam can be used to soften and loosen dried-on food particles, making it easier for the mechanical action of the dishwasher to remove them. Steam-assisted dishwashers have been tested, but they have not replaced the need for detergents entirely.

While these alternative methods have been explored, detergents have remained the most effective and practical way to ensure consistent and reliable cleaning of a wide range of dishware. Developing new technologies that can match the cleaning power and cost-effectiveness of detergents remains a challenging task.
