A window air conditioner (AC) requires electricity to operate, and it cannot get ventilation without power. Let's understand how a typical window air conditioner functions:

  1. Electricity: A window AC unit is an electrical appliance that needs a power supply to run its compressor, fan, and other components. It plugs into a standard electrical outlet to draw the necessary electrical energy.

  2. Cooling Process: Window air conditioners work by taking in warm indoor air, passing it over evaporator coils containing a refrigerant. The refrigerant absorbs the heat from the air, and the cooled air is then blown back into the room by a fan.

  3. Ventilation: To operate effectively, window AC units require proper ventilation for two reasons:

    a. Hot Air Exhaust: The cooling process generates heat, which must be expelled from the system. This is achieved through the condenser coils on the back or sides of the unit. The hot air is blown out to the outside environment.

    b. Air Circulation: The AC needs a continuous flow of air from the room to cool it. The fan draws warm air from the room over the evaporator coils, where the heat exchange takes place.

Without electricity, a window air conditioner cannot power its compressor and fan, and therefore, it cannot cool the room or perform any ventilation. If there is a power outage or the AC is not plugged in, it will not function at all. During power outages, other forms of ventilation, such as opening windows or using fans, are the only options to circulate air and maintain comfort until the power is restored.
