Some washing machines do include a drying function, known as washer/dryer combo units or washer-dryers. These appliances are designed to both wash and dry clothes in the same machine, making them convenient for smaller living spaces or situations where separate washer and dryer units are not feasible.

However, there are several reasons why not all washing machines come with built-in dryers:

  1. Space limitations: Integrating a drying function into a washing machine requires additional components and space inside the appliance. In traditional washing machines, this space is used solely for washing purposes, while drying machines have dedicated space for airflow and heating elements. Combining both functions can lead to compromises in terms of capacity and drying performance.

  2. Efficiency and performance: Separate washer and dryer units are generally more efficient and perform better in their respective functions. A dedicated dryer is designed to optimize the drying process, using efficient airflow and heating mechanisms to dry clothes quickly and effectively. Combining the functions might result in less efficient drying or longer drying times.

  3. Maintenance and repairs: Having separate washer and dryer units allows for easier maintenance and repair. If one component breaks down, you can still use the other while waiting for repairs. In a washer/dryer combo, if the whole unit malfunctions, both washing and drying functionalities could be affected at the same time.

  4. Load capacity: Washer/dryer combo units often have a smaller drying capacity compared to stand-alone dryers. After washing a load, you might need to remove some items before starting the drying process to ensure proper drying and avoid overloading the machine.

  5. Cost: Washer/dryer combos tend to be more expensive than standalone washing machines. People with larger laundry needs might prefer to invest in separate units to get better performance and capacity for their budget.

While washer/dryer combo units offer convenience and space-saving benefits, they may not be the best choice for everyone. If you have the space and resources, using separate washing and drying machines can provide better efficiency, performance, and overall convenience in the long run.
